Do and make: grammar lesson 18

Do & Make

Do:
                  
1.  Indefinite activities:
do something, do anything, do nothing, do everything, do a thing

2.  Work and jobs:
do any work, do the shopping, do the washing, do your homework, do the housework

3.  Activities that take time or are repeated:
do a lot of reading, do some thinking

4. Certain fixed expressions:
do good, do harm, do business, do one’s best, do a favour, do exercise, do 50 kph

Make:

Use make when you talk about constructing, building or creating. You make something when you create something which was not there before.

1.  Construct or create:
make a cake, make a table, make an appointment, make a mark

2. Certain fixed expressions:
make an offer, make arrangements, make a suggestion, make a decision, make an attempt, make an effort, make an excuse, make an exception, make a mistake, make a phone call, make a noise, make money, make a profit, make a fortune, make love, make peace, make a bed, make a fire, make progress, make plans



Practice: Complete the following sentences with the proper form of make or do.
